"Como si fueras a morir mañana"

Date of Birth:

August 11, 1996

Career Highlights:

2025 World Champion, 2026 European Champion and 6th at Paris Olympic Games.

Who has been your idol in canoeing?

Isabel Contreras.

What is your favorite distance and type of training?

My favorite distance is the 200m, and I love speed training the most.

Favorite paddle and boat?

Paddle: Braca

Boat: Nelo

Where is your favorite place to train?

Asturias and Seville.

Do you have a song that motivates you?

“Como si fueras a morir mañana” and “Sangre.”

What advice would you give to beginners?

The foundation of everything in life is enjoying what we do—without that, everything loses its meaning.

Was there a key moment in your career when you thought, “I want to dedicate myself to this at the highest level”?

Not really. I just started training, and things began to happen naturally. Before I realized it, it had become my profession.

How do you handle pressure during high-demand periods, especially before major championships?

I don’t usually feel much pressure, and I’m able to manage those moments well. What helps me relax and switch off is thinking about animals.

Do you have any pre-race rituals or routines?

I put on my headphones, wear my lucky socks, and listen to motivational songs on repeat.

What does your daily life look like as a professional athlete?

My daily routine revolves around training, eating well to recover for the next session, and resting. There’s not much time for anything else.

Last season, you became World Champion with your K4 crew. Would you say it was the best season of your career?

Yes, it was the best season of my career, but I also think it was one of the best in Spanish women’s canoeing. I hope it won’t be the last.

What do you think is behind the huge improvement of the Spanish women’s national team in recent years?

A mindset that doesn’t understand limits—one that truly believes it’s possible. What you believe, you create. Our coach really makes us believe in ourselves.

After winning a world title, is it difficult to stay motivated for the following season? What are your current goals?

Not at all—if anything, it motivates me even more to stay on this path. Now we know how it’s done; we just have to keep going. My short-term goals are all the competitions throughout the season, but those are just steps toward the big goal: the Olympic Games… or rather, an Olympic medal.

What did it mean to you to experience the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, and how do you assess your results there?

The Paris Games were a dream come true—a goal achieved. Earning an Olympic diploma is something not everyone can say. But as soon as it was over, I was already thinking about Los Angeles 2028.

Thank you Sara and good luck in this season!
